I know that he's a cousin of the queen, but can anyone shed some light on the exact relationship between the two?

Ummmm they were cousins- what other kinda relationship do you want?
The son of Viscount Anson and Princess Anne of Denmark, Patrick Lichfield - the 5th Earl of Lichfield - was the Queen's first cousin once removed..

If A and B are "first cousins" - ie they share the same grandparents but not the same parents - then if A has a child, that child is B's "first cousin once removed". The 'once removed' element just means that a further generation is involved.
