I want to go to america and work for a short while not sure what i want to do or where i want to go just had enough of the ratace any ideas ?

Forget it.

The US does not allow visitors to work, with few exceptions like working with kids in a summer camp.

Australia has a working holiday visa if you are under (I think) 30 - maybe a better idea. I think Canada has something similar too.

Don't think you'll make it without a valid work permit (Green Card). And I suspect that whilst the grass may look greener on the other side, you might find that Americans consider they're struggling to cope with their own rat race. (And have far fewer vacations than workers in the UK to relieve the stress of it)..

Before you pack, what do you mean by rat race? Most of us tend to live with routines and most of us are busy which can make us feel like we are in a rat race. Howver, these routines are not always bad. They might be, which is something you may want to assess. Why does it feel like you are just another rat in a race? It may be that there are aspects of your life where you are not content. That may be something you can fix without going abroad.

You can pick pretty much anywhere in America where you want to be living, and they help you to sort out work permits and everything. It is also a great way to imerse yourself in the culture and make instant friends, which would be good as you say that you are only planning on staying a short while.

My daughter married an American and now lives in the States. Believe me, one man's rat race is another man's idyll! They have their own business and work very hard with very long hours - and every month it's a struggle to make ends meet. They can't afford health care and, unlike this country, they don't get free health care. I visited them 2 years ago and my daughter came down with flu. She became very ill and had to go to a clinic. $400 dollars for a 5 day supply of antibiotics! That's about �250! So that was half of what they'd just made on one of their products they'd recently sold! If you want a decent quality of life, I'm afraid it's the 'rat race' for most of us!

Forget the dobting Thomases, you have a choice of 50 countries all rolled into one ! The worlds your oyster, read a us travel guid, decide which appeals most and just do it !

But isn't going to America to escape the rat race a bit like going to the arctic to escape the cold?
