Where does the name COREY come from?

Have noticed a lot of children called COREY lately. Where does this name come from and why is it so popular at the moment? And while I'm here, what's wrong with some of our beautiful, traditional British names?

My godson is called Cory. Apparently it is an American name and after my friend named him that she found out that Cory is also a rude name for a mans meat (and two veg)!! She was not amused.

Re Corey, this is from a 'names' website...

"From a surname which was possibly either derived from the Old Norse given name Kori (of unknown meaning), or else "ravine" in Gaelic."

As to why it is popular, I have no idea.

Probably because all the slack jawed numbskulls who give their kids daft names sit at home watching Channel 5 and re runs of Beverly Hills 50210 (or whatever) and that is the scope of their cultural intake.

Here is an interesting fact though- no one in this country was called Gary until the film star Gary Cooper came to prominence. Gary is a uniquely American name. (i'm sure some smart alec is gong to prove me wrong on this!)

the name wendy was invented for the story of peter pan. so every one called that since the must be indirectly named after a whater she was.

Surely, COREY (spelling variations are Cory, Corrie etc) is a tribute to that traditional Britist institution "Coronation Street". Presumably they were all conceived during that programme. Also a boy you may think is Henry (or `enry) is in fact called enders after that other programme. In this area we also have lots of CAS`s - Saturday night conceptions, and BILL`s and EMM(-dales) mid-week.

But have you also noticed how kids nowadays have first names that used to be surnames? Jordan,. Brandon, Grant, Tyler, Jefferson, I have even heard a kid called Smith.

Best one lately though a woman was calling her her daughter Andy and the girl was ignoring her, to which the mother shouted ANDROMEDA will you come here now!

I believe Gary Cooper himself was named after the town of Gary, Indiana - where I presume he was either born or conceived - so anyone called Gary must have been indirectly named after him.

lankeela, it used to be common practice for eldest sons to be given their mothers' maiden names as forenames, and I think the habit may still persist to some extent, at least in Yorkshire. I had a great-uncle whose first name was Bowman, after his mother's family. My own first name, Graham, is originally a Scottish surname, but no-one is surprised to see it as a forename these days; just fashion and usage, I suppose.

Narolines - We gave my daughter my mums maiden name - Melody. Not out of any tradition but just liked the name.

My daughter is called Corey. We got the name from a song by Harry Chapin called "Corey's coming". At the time when I was pregnant with her 22 years ago my husband and I were both teaching and had been for 7 years. It's amazing how many names you can go off because of their association with certain children. There were other names that were just too common - at that time there were a lot of Sarahs, Emma, Catherines, etc., often 2 or 3 in a class and we simply wanted something different for our daughter.

Bigdog is partly right. Certainly Wendy gained popularity as a result of Peter Pan but had been used as a diminutive of Gwendoline, especially in Wales, for many years prior to JM Barrie's work.

lots of first names were once Scottish surnames. Cameron, Gordon, Bruce, Neil, Donald, Duncan, Douglas... I don't know why.
