I believe it's military thinking that, despite all efforts to dehumanise soldiers to the point where they will follow orders as a reflex action, they have been unable to overcome the primeval response in men as males that they would stop to assist a wounded female comrade, if not a male one, and this renders soliders less efficient than they should be. Humanity - it's just the pits isn't it!!!
The reasons are complex in a culture that accepts the sexes are equal and should have equal opportunity

Stated reasons are that females are not physically strong enough - and those training to the same standrad as male soldiers have shown a disproportionately high standard of injuries.

Any succesful fighting team has to get an exceptionally high esprit de corp and blind mad fighting spirit to the total disregard of ones own life. Absolute reliance on ones comrades.

The dynamics of sex throw a spanner in this. Men want to protect and nurture women - its inherent.

In the end, when picking up a bayonet and sticking it into anothers belly in hand to hand fighting, the strong and bloody minded tend to succeed. Men do this best.
