Passive Smoking

If you where in a pub and someone came and sat next to you and let their ciggie smoke go all over you - would you be able to tell them to move their ciggie ??

I wouldn't even let them get as far as lighting it up, but then I don't go in pubs as i cannot tolerate cig smoke physically, I react badly to it.

When I take a seat in a pub, I make sure there's no ashtray on the table, problem is, at present, most pubs allow smoking, so it'll get you anyway, but as a matter of courtesy, they should ask first.

If the pub is specifically 'no smoking' I would have a word with a member of staff, but no, you can't 'tell' someone to move their ciggie in this situation.

Because of the government's fudging of the smoking issue, the 'rights' of smokers continue to prevail - is that a floodgate I can hear opening? Bring it on!

I would ask politely of they would blow it and hold it in the other direction. if they continued i would have a few more drinks and get the nerve to be a bit more firm with them. i hate it people actually exhale it in your face - they seem to not even realise! then i do get irate and will tell them off. if its just natuarlly winding its way towards me (which it usually does head for the none smoker!!) i will accept that they may not realise and approach the situation with courtesy.

As a smoker I make a concerted effort to make sure I'm not blowing it at anyone although in a pub that can be difficult but I wouldnt be offended if someone politely pointed out that it was going in there direction and would move so it didnt.

If I was a smoker and had lit up in a place where smoking is allowed and somebody told me to remove my cigarette, they would be told, in no uncertain terms, to **** ***.

Totally agree with flip-flop. I'm not a smoker but feel sorry for them, there are getting so few places for them to smoke that in the places they can they should be left in peace.

I agree with joko, as a smoker I have no problem in changing directon of smoke and I never light up around children. I see it as basic manners. If I go out for a meal or to someone's home then I wouldn't drem of lighting up until it was indicated that it was ok to do so.

The problem for me is when people get a bit hoity toity in a smoking place and are rude to a smoker. As I live in London with many pubs around, many of which have large no smoking areas I see no problem with non smokers finding a smoke free environment.

If people are polite then it makes life easier and smoother for everybody!

Guess what happens in Scotland this year? No more arguments or frustration. Smoking will be banned in all public places. As a (not bitter) ex smoker I really think it is best all round.

Sorry those of you who are smokers but i hope it gets banned in all pubs and clubs in England. They should go outside and stop making the rest of us breath it in and making our clothes stink. Maybe it would help more people give up aswell.

I know when i go in the pub that people will be smoking and i still choose to go. i don't like it, but i don't want to cause rows either - i may have the highground in some ways(polution, lung cancer etc) but legally i don't have any rights so politeness is the only way - you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar

i ask in a pally, chatty way, like 'do me favour', and 'would you mind just pointing your ciggy that way mate, its getting on my chest a bit, thanks' and most are receptive.

i hate it and i have asthma and it gives me a sore throat but being snooty with people just gives smokers the ammunition to complain abouty non-smokers being self righteous

As I live in Ireland we no longer have to put up with other peoples smoke.Its so great I find it hard to comprehend the Btitish approach.It seems that food in a pub is the issue,therefore a Cornish Pastie has more protection than a bar worker.

So come to Ireland,use Ryanair soon to be the biggest airline in the world,not bad for a wee country.Smoking Ban for an entire country,you saw it here first.Happy New Year.
