Hubby and I are off to Edinburgh this weekend. Can you suggest a couple of pubs and restaurants not too far off the beaten track for us to try? We're staying just off Princes Street. Many thanks! x

A strange question to ask, as if you are staying just off Princes Street you won't have far to look! Or do you mean outside of Edinburgh?

Sorry Dkeyse, I should have added that we were at the North Bridge end of Princes Street and wanted a couple of nearby suggestions so we don't have to stagger back too far to the hotel. I know there are tons of pubs and places to eat off Princes Street, but a couple of recommendations would be ideal thanks.
Sounds as if you are in the Old Town around the George IV Bridge! A good restaurant is The Outsider, but for a snack try The Elephant. As far as pubs are concerned it is never ending, but try Bar Kohl, 54 George IV Bridge, a real surprise, or Scruffy Murphys! No explanation needed! Have a good time!

Depends on your stamina. For Alcohol - Got too much money to spend? Go to the Scotsman. Or see and be seen at Opal Lounge on George Street, 5 mins walk away (Prince Williams fave bar in town. Lots of mirrors for posing at)

On Royal Mile (just starting to be dug up and re-layed over the next 12 months, so may be messy) go down hill to the Mitre. At top is the Bank. If you want to be up 'til 4.00 am go to Whistle Binkies for live music.

For food - go to Black Bo's vegetarian menu and brilliant with it, just down off the Royal Mile, Or Hadrians at the Balmoral. Or Cafe St Honore in North West Thistle Lane, behind Princes Street -a 10 star place at any time. Or good seafood at Fishers, behind the Tron (you'll find that to close by North Bridge) Or the Reform - nice and intimate on Canongate, just after thw Worlds End pub down the R/Mile.

Tons to choose from. Weather may be a bit windy though and could be raining Sunday, so good excuse for a wee swallie! Oh, and for a nice souvenir, come to the Edinburgh farmers' Market, Castle Terrace, 9.00 - 2.00 on Saturday!!
