//The move comes as rivals Shell and Norwegian company Equinor have also scaled back plans to invest in green energy and US President Donald Trump's "drill baby drill" comments have encouraged investment in fossil fuels.

Murray Auchincloss, BP's chief executive, said the energy giant had gone "too far, too fast" in the transition away from fossil fuels, and that its faith in green energy was "misplaced".//

Sensible for those companies profits especially as Norway is Europe's leading light in electric cars despite being oil rich.

Nine in 10 new cars in this European country are electric - is it the blueprint for going electric? https://mol.im/a/14439389 via https://dailym.ai/android

makes sense.

terrible news.

Ed Milliband is probably having a fit of the vapours!

more fossil fuels means more greenhouse gases means more warming.

but at least we can all be happy for BP's shareholders earning slightly more money than they otherwise would.

Undoubtedly we have imposed far too strict a "green push" on ourselves and need to back off, while others do insufficient to tackle the issues. But the commercial companies will be more interested in their profit margins than anthing else.

One nation's leader decides to ignore the global warming issue and that gives a green light for others to decide, if they aren't bothering then neither will we.

The pendulum is at risk of swinging between different extremes and nothing getting solved. One hopes it doesn't take too long to settle somewhere sensible.

...anything...

untitled: "But at least we can all be happy for BP's shareholders earning slightly more money than they otherwise would. " - yep my draw down fund took another step closer to my own private jet😃

Nothing we do makes any difference. When the US/India/China stop burning a million tons of coal an hour then we have a chance.

BP is in a position to do something meaningful about the problem and are choosing not to.

and china is making progress. about 35% of their electricity comes from renewable resources and they have about 80% of the world's solar power capacity. it is the world's largest investor in renewable energy.

their plan is to industrialise rapidly and then decarbonise just as quickly. one might quibble with that plan but it is not accurate to say china is doing nothing.

No one said they are doing nothing but the fact remains that currently the fossil fuel consumption of the big three dwarfs anything the rest of us can do.

I suspect BP accounts for more greenhouse gas emissions than the entire of the UK as a country does... and it's controlled by maybe a few hundred people.

the only reason they have done this is to slightly increase profits which were already extremely high. it is indefensible.

Good!

Excellent news.

Hopefully the Climate scam will be exposed for what it is; a get rich scheme for a feew (for one a certain Mr Vince).

The whole moving away from oil needs to be a long term plan, over 50 years, not for unprovable climate nonsence but foir measurable pollution.  However the plan has to bring all along for the ride, cating for the rich that can afford such luxuries as electric cars and penalising the poor is no good at all.

Over that time of course a correct infrastructuer can be put in place.  Also the correct tech can be adopted instead of rushing to the Betamax solution.  I strongly suspect Wind and Solar will not be the way forward in the long term.

//and it's controlled by maybe a few hundred people.//  ???? Pass the sick bag alice.

The climate change scam is driven and was enacted by 1 deranged Milliband, who hails from a family who were sheltered and given a save haven in the UK. and in return have all spent their lives doing as much damage as to us as they can(check out his father). It all started back in 2000 with a Statutory Instrument introduced into Parliament by the Enegy Commision(see below) that intended to persuade companies and suppliers to voluntary make efforts to reduce pollution. All very laudible with one big fail. There was money to be made by joining the scam.
The Parliament website says:

Statutory instruments are the most common form of secondary (or delegated) legislation.
The power to make a statutory instrument is set out in an Act of Parliament and nearly always conferred on a Minister of the Crown. The Minister is then able to make law on the matters identified in the Act, and using the parliamentary procedure set out in the Act.”

In other words, a Minister can use an SI to make law, without the need for an Act of Parliament. The original legal authority was embedded in the innocuous sounding Utilities Act 2000, a wide ranging bill designed to regulate the gas and electricity industries. It was never the intention of that Act to empower Ministers to levy tens of billions from bill payers in order to pursue their perverted political agenda.
In 2008 Milliband was the single clown with the perverted power to make just that deranged law. Follow the money and check who he is consorting with.
The running cost to the British people, so far, is £100Billion!!

Togo: "The climate change scam is driven and was enacted by 1 deranged Milliband, who hails from a family who were sheltered and given a save haven in the UK. and in return have all spent their lives doing as much damage as to us as they can(check out his father)." - ironically has Father was called "Adolph"! - he changed it to Ralph, but yes he was araving ungrateful marxist tawt.

"not for unprovable climate nonsence"

"the climate change scam"

🤦🏻‍♂️

A lot of people are making a lot of money from climate change.

Apart from climate change, we need to reduce our reliance on the international oil and electricity market? If we could be wholly or even highly self-sufficient, that would surely be a good thing.

"A lot of people are making a lot of money from climate change."

and therefore... what?
