Could someone please tell me why muslim women wear yashmaks?

The wearing a head dress is an ancient Jewish tradition, and has been adopted widely elsewhere. It can be a sign of respect, a sign of purity or worn as a badge of honour to express religious belief and decency. In Islam women are advised not to reveal any parts of their bodies 'except that which is necessary'. The word Yashmak is Turkish in origin, coming from 'yasmak' which was made up of two pieces of muslin, one tied across the face below the nose, and the other tied across the forehead, covering the top of the head.

I have been told it is partly a cultural thing but it is also a sign of modesty, both Muslim men and women are required to cover their heads before God as a sign of modesty.

Actually, it is mostly the unattractive ones that do so.
