How about potatoes and tobacco, courtesy of Sir Walter Raleigh? I'm a non-smoker nowadays, but cigarettes, pipes and cigars gave me pleasure for many years...and I still love chips, bangers'n' mash, roast spuds of a Sunday....etc.
Tartanwizard... Thomas Edison did not invent the incandescent light bulb, this was first made and manufactured by Joseph Swan from Sunderland who worked in Newcastle upon Tyne. His invention was hampered by poor sealing and lack of a good enough vacuum. Edison used better tools some 20 years later to improve the vacuum and devised the well known screw fitting to make the device marketable. Another factor in Edison's success was the greater availbility of electricity generation and supply by that time. Joseph Swan went on to improve the filament material to increase the lifespan of the bulbs.
Making dumb comments to english people is what the people of the usa are good for, such examples are "Do you know the Queen?" and "Do you have computers in the UK". Sometimes when people ask this i get really irate and says "do you think all 60million people know the queen" LOL ha.
