It might have been half of a potato.
I think it was 2 sticks of celery. Early police cars used to stick half a potato on the roof as a substitute for a flashing light. A PC had to walk in front of the car waving a flag and shouting NER-NER NER-NER..probably.
If they had a smash I suppose it would be mashed potato.
early cars often had leeks
...and some suffered from car-rot
Yes I agree it was the old spud!
they say that if your wipers are past there best that you should cut a potato in half and rub it on the blades to make them work better!!
