half term help for a lancashire lass

we want to take the kids out for the day on Friday. Where on earth could we go in the north west of england that would amuse a 2, 4 and 12 year old? Does such a place exist?

Is there a Sea Life Centre anywhere near you? Maybe Blackpool or one of the other big seaside towns have one. You will be indoors most of the time, so the weather won't matter and there are things to see that will amuse/entertain all ages. You can even handle some of the exhibits, like the starfish.

A little bit of coals to Newcastle, there.

When I was a lad my Dad would take us to a motorway bridge, normally one on the M6 between Wigan and Preston for a 'day out'. He'd sit in the car whilst we watched trucks go by. For a special treat he'd sometimes takes us where the East Lancs and M6 met up in Haydock. It used to fascinate me and my younger brothers and kept us quiet for most of the afternoon. Didn't cost my parents anything, either.

It's still a popular Lancashire pastime today. Take a look next time you're on that stretch of motorway, you'll see loads of people on the bridges having a cheap 'day out'.

If that idea doesn't suit, take them for a hike up Darwen Tower.

There's this really cool interactive museum I used to go to on school trips when I was younger called Eureka. It's in Halifax in Yorkshire and it really is good fun.

hi everyone - just to let you know that we went to the south lakes wild animal park. Absolutely fantastic! Although freezing cold, the kids had a great time as the animals were so lively and accessible. There is lots of work going on too, so it looks like it's just going to get better and better.
