When I was a little girl, I lived in Hong Kong for a short time. This year, my sister and i and our respective spouses are planning a jolly over to the pearl of the orient for some serious shopping and a stroll down memory lane.

Anyone been recently? Anyone recommend a good but cheap hotel that we can stay in fairly central, maybe Tsim Sha choi or admiralty, centrla, etc.... ? ANything to be warned of.

I appreciate how much it must have changed since '97, so any advice would be readliy welcomed!

cheers

I visited for a day on a cruise last year after 18 years. Hasn't changed that much, it seems busier but probably isn't. Hyatt Regency was good when I went there originally but can't help with that. Stanley Market is still there and the bus trip is cheap and excellent value.

Hi dannydb
Thanks for replying. I'm glad stanley market is still there. I have had to get all my scrapbooks and photos out as I was only 12 when I left and so some of my geography of the area I have forgotten. I remember the buses with the slot for the money as I had to go on several to school (I lived at midlevels and went to school in MongKok - boy did that seem like a long journey!)

How old were you when you left? I left in 1988 but went back for afew years every summer until 1992 as my dad was still living there as he was working.

It's weird, I remember it so well, yet its also so fuzzy.

Afraid I can't help with your query as such, I was in HK 71/73, with the forces, and am still in touch with a friend who married a local girl and stayed out there, I can ask him if you like, ref the hotels.

If you'd like me to do that, post back.

P.s I'm very excited about going back in case you couldn't tell!
Question Author
that would be very kind: I don't want to be a bother to you though, however, am very interested in any recommendations anyone might have.....

thank you so much.

Sorry lonnie, I meant to use your name in my post and in my excitement (behaving like a 3 year old) I forgot my manners. I do apologise....
*blush*
No worries, your forgiven, i'll get an email off to him, and hopefully i'll have something for you soon. I envy you going over there, I fell in love with the place, but due to circumstances here, there's no chance.

oh lonnie, i love it too. I've been aching to go back there since I left really. i wish (I could take all my kids with me, but seeing as there are 5 of them, i think I might need to remortgage my house in order to do so!

I just love everything about it, but especially the star ferry and the curry fish balls for sale from the hawkers! ( Daddy banned me from buying food from the hawkers, and quite right too, what was I thinking, but walking home from school and being so hungry, and they smelled so nice......just lucky i never got poisoned. He still doesn't know I used to eat them just the same. maybe I should confess?)
thank you for your kindness Lonnie, I really appreciate it.
