People use obscenities as conjunctions, and simply regard them as everyday speech. I'm not offended by it, but i think it sounds harsh and ugly, and infers stupidity on the part of the speaker. If a child hears such words as regular vocaubulary, they will use them, even though paretns often say "Where does he get it from?" because they genuinely don;t realise that they use these words.
I would never swear in any company except like-minded adults. I never swear in front of my grown-up daughters - the first time one of them used the 'F' word in front of me was pure exasperation, and I was so surprised, but also sympathetic, that I laughed! There were only she and I in earshot, and I think she was a bit embarassed, but it's not occured since.
i swear a lot, but in my proffesional life i have to deal with the general public, so i know it cant be used , but when i am with the lads, its every other word...............
but, the other day the police surrounded my business premises (looking for drug dealers) not me by the way, anyway when i found out i said "for f*ck sake" out a bit to loud.................. my 4 year old son then asked me who ***** sake was!! i was mortified that i lost myself for 1 second, and he picked it up like that....... me and the wife swept the word out of his head, but i was very very ashamed!!!!
think I'm like most of the postees here, I swear but never infront of people I dont know or my elders. And I have been known to remind people that i've got a 16 month old who adores new words if im out and about and people swear around me.
I still consider it bad manners to swear in public amongst strangers- does that make me old fashioned?
Just to say I agree with the other posters, I can swear like a trouper when I get going, but I don't swear at work, in front of my parents or young children, even if their parents do!
I was shocked to see an advert tonight for Austrailia that ended with the phrase 'So where the bloody hell are you?' or something like that, I know thats not as bad as the 'F' or 'S' word, but I'd never have got away with saying that in front of my parents. Maybe overprotective but I'd rather that than, having every other word a swear word!
This happened several times. When I told the mother she shouldn't be encouraging him to do that she told me to'f*** off' and her son said 'Yeah f*** o**'.
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I am frankly horrified.
But trying to be serious, I'm of the opinion that we reap what we sow. Few people are willing to take responsibility for declining standards in society. It's always somebody else's fault. Parents blame teachers, for example, but are reluctant to discipline their kids. By the way, why is that? Kids spend approx 15% of their lives during school age actually in school, yet teachers invariably get the blame for how they turn out.
Of course, language (including bad language) is always evolving. There are words used now that have different connotations to what they meant 100/200 etc years ago. If a little kid came up to me in a pub and told me to f*** off, I'd find a way to get my own back, believe me!
