No, this is not an x-rated question! Why does a 'x' symbolise a kiss? Just wondering the history behind people signing a kiss using the letter 'x'. I have also noticed that none of my Aussie or Canadian friends use kisses, so am also wondering if it's mostly a Brit thing? Perhaps we are just more affectionate?! xxxx

'X' has been used to represent a kiss from as long ago as the middle of the 18th century. As for why X' means that, it's probably because the letter actually sounds very much like 'ks', which could be seen as an abbreviation of 'kiss'.
In addition, as Chulaprez says above, it might also represent two faces seen side-on, with lips puckered up and touching...ie a kiss! It may take a bit of imagination, but try it.
