Can anyone tell me any famous or historic events in Pennsylvania USA. All I know is that the name featured in a famous old song - something like "Pennsylvania 6500" or something like that.

Pennsylvania 6500 was a record by Glen Miller, It was the telephone number of the hotel that they had stayed in!

Lots of things happened in Pennsylvania as it was one of the first colonies of the UK. If you Google you will come up with all sorts of things.

Sept 11th Flight 93 crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. Is that historic?

Battle of Gettysburg, July 2nd to 4th 1863, the turning point of the U.S. Civil War. Followed in November that year by President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, which was a 2-minute speech given at the dedication ceremony for the Gettysburg National War Cemetery. One of the most famous (and moving) speeches ever, though it was initially described as "silly, flat and dishwatery" by an idiot from the Chicago Sun Times.

Pennsylvania is also known for their coal mines. Look-up "Underground Fire, Centralia". A fire started in Centralia, I believe in the mid 70's early 80's. If Im not mistaken, It ignited from a garbage pit that led underground. Something was ignited and the fire spread to the coal mines.

I have been to Centralia. The town is indescribable. It leaves you feeling you're in the Twilight Zone. The trees are all dead and turning to ash. You can see the heat billowing up through the ashy gray ground. The paved roads are cracked from the heat of the fire, and certain areas are so gaseous you are told to wear masks. The government will not pay to have the fire put out because of the cost. People were forced to leave everything they have.

It's very sad...and quite eerie.

Wow - dancealot - that's a fantastic story about the underground fire, I've just googled it and think it's fascinating.

spudqueen- I know. It's too bad you can't see it in person..it's really quite shocking. The smell and the heat. Certain places there are acres and acres of land that is complete ash, and if you walk on it, you will sink through. Pretty amazing. xx
