The country is the Netherlands. Holland was the predominant county that made up part of the Netherlands, and Dutch is the language spoken in the Netherlands.

Hi stevie - you just carry on and have fun - 21 million living there may have an issue with that but don't let that stop you . . . and the ones that speak freisian in the north of the country might enjoy it as well. Really mixed up place - good fun and nice people, but you're right - what are they really called then?

Dutch, I think,comes from Deutch,ie German. Dutch, the language was once called 'Low German'.

The phrase "going Dutch" probably originates from Dutch etiquette. In the Netherlands, it is not unusual to pay separately when dating. The Dutch were already internationally known as scrooges, and English rivalry with The Netherlands especially during the period of the Anglo-Dutch Wars gave rise to several phrases including Dutch that promote certain negative stereotypes. Examples include Dutch courage, Dutch uncle and Dutch wife. The particular stereotype associated with this usage is the idea of Dutch people as ungregarious and selfish.
