What does it take for a place in the USA to be classed as a city?

It has to incorporate as a city under the laws of its state.
It also means a postal district. I lived in a small suburb no bigger than Hackney or Wandsworth but that was called a city by the post office. I drove through 5 cities to get to work every day!

Thankyou both. The reason I asked this question was that Americans tend to call places cities that we would call one-horse towns or villiages.
