East London is pretty rough on the whole, esp. Hackney. Don't go there at all, unless you actually know someone who lives there, or unless you have a very good reason to go there.

Brixton is also rough; but apparently, they've started to 'clean it up' although I haven't been there for a long time, and so I couldn't say.

Tottenham is also very dangerous, particularly at night.

I must say that I don't find any part of London that bad. I lived there for more than 20 years mainly in areas with a supposedly bad reputation: eg, New Cross, Finsbury Park and Balham (I know Balham's a bit up-market these days but it was dubbed the mugging capital of London in the mid-80s). I also had two girlfriends who lived in Tottenham (not at the same time!) so I spent a lot of time there.

In all that time, I was never once mugged, threatened, followed or made uncomfortable in any way. And as I don't drive, I got around on foot and public transport.

There are little pockets of places where you don't want to walk around at night but the gentrification process has rendered a lot of places as threatening as Toytown. You're more likely to be run over by a 4x4 than mugged in Brixton these days for example.

Much as I don't like the place, I've never felt unsafe anywhere in London, whether it be Brixton, Kings Cross, Tower Hamlets or anywhere else

Anywhere in London is rough if you go looking for trouble you will find it,

I am a Londoner, and was born In Notting Hill,when it was a slum, I have also lived in New Cross area for several years, London is ok, just gotta keep your wits about you, why do you want to know, are you going to live there???
