The story goes that in the 18th Century a ship sailed into Hartlepool with a monkey on board. The people of the town, never having seen one before, presumed that it was a foreign spy and hanged it.

Capital punishment for animals was popular in earlier times, especially in France where pigs, in particular, were sentenced to death.
