'Strengths' is usually quoted as the answer, but that's just because it has only one vowel as well as only one syllable. There are others such as 'scrunched' or 'stretched', also with nine letters.

North Americans would also pronounce 'squirrelled' with one syllable, though it doesn't quite work in standard spoken English.

Yet again i am astounded by your superior knowledge QM - we are not worthy, we are not worthy
Smiles. [s-mile-s] :-)
Darth, It's truly amazing, the amount of seemingly useless mental lumber one picks up over six and a half decades...then somewhere like AnswerBank allows one to unload it and others are actually grateful! Cheers, anyway.
Schreeched is another possibility.
Sorry, I can't type/ It should have been "screeched".
Quizmonster it's amazing what we can retain, Alexi Sayle's joke springs to mind about our brains being a bucket, once full, the next thing we remebered would knock out a stored thought - his worry was he'd think of somethjing trivial, them forget how to walk, breathe or talk [often happens to me on a weekend off!] Cheers keep it up
I like the joke, Paul...typical Sayle...but the brain-bucket just appears to be bottomless. We keep hearing, don't we, that we rarely use more than about 5% of its potential? I take your point about its specifically 'weekend' failures, though! After eight pints and a vindaloo of a Friday, who needs the wretched thing anyway? Cheers
