I have heard the the town of Cholmondeley in Cheshire is pronounced 'Chumley' Featherstonehough is pronounced 'fanshaw' is this true and are there any other silly pronunciations

it's true, and English, bless it, is full of bizrrre pronunciations. As far as place names, i'm from Norfolk - home of Happisburgh (Haysboro), Wymondham (Windum) and Costessy (Cossey).
