lass? lassie?
A surveyor that I worked with, who came from Glasgow, used to call all females 'hen', or 'hin', regardless of age.

thanks guys. this is the sort of thing i'm looking for.
please god, not lass or lassie. Not unless you're writing a novel about very old scottish people lmao

"hen" is very common, as is "pet" and infact "doll" is often used too, but that's perhaps a slightly more glaswegian (and dare I say, neddish) phrase than scotland-wide
I would say the ones mentioned above are more Scottish terms for women in general. I assume you mean a name for this character to call his wife/girlfriend, in which case it's most likely to be a private name thought up between them as it would be for a couple from any other part of the world. My husband and I are both Scottish and our pet names would not in any way reveal where we come from. We do also use honey and darling and all the usual ones - Scottish people do speak the same language as people in England !:~)
Couples all over the world think up ridiculous pet names like 'snugglybunny' or 'fluffychops'.
This may be just the part of Scotland I'm in - would be interested to hear what others have to say.
My fiance calls me a numpty but I'm not so sure it's an affectionate term! :o/

I think it depends on where and when the story will be set as the language has changed over the years.
I agree with you yinyang, we do use pet names that don't let on where we are from.

Where I'm from in Scotland, 'Doll' is very common.
I wouldn't really have said 'Doll' would be a pet name though. It's more what workies shout at women as they walk past a site.
But then I was going to say 'Snowy', until I read the question again and realised you weren't actually looking for a pet (dog or cat!) name!
Hen was a very common pet name with the women customers when I worked in a call centre.
In the North East of Scotland they use the term Loons & Quines for Boys & Girls !!!!!
I knew of a scottish girl who was obsessed with going home time at work. We used to call her Och, Jock the Speaking Clock!!
I think Hen is good
To 'Lore'.....Numpty is NOT affectionate -but more akin to idiot!
