Dangerous job

I was amazed to read an article recently stating that "Game Wardens in the United states are nine times more likely to be killed on the job than inner city cops"!
My question is- Is this all down to bad marksmanship / accidental shootings or are their other factors involved ie avalanche, fires bear attacks, other natural elements and is the wilderness really an unsafe place to be for travellers and tourists or any one else for that matter?

I haven't seen the article, T-Bird, but here's a brief excerpt from the Game Warden Career Application information in my western U.S. State:
Work Environment:
"Cadets and game wardens work extensively out-of-doors, during inclement and sometimes hazardous weather conditions, during natural disasters and under other possibly dangerous conditions. At times, wardens and cadets are required to work in highly stressful situations that may be hazardous to their health and safety, which could include working with people who are injured, violent, emotionally upset or otherwise pose a danger."

There are few other law enforcement segments that encounter the suspected criminals in a remote area, out of sight or contact with any one else, and fully armed as there are in most of our western states. Game Wardens here in the U.S. are fully appointed with all law enforcement duties as well. They respond to natural disasters, other criminal activity and work in all konds of inclement weather. I have friends that are Game Wardens (neccessitated by our ranching environment) and find them to be, generally, level headed and easy to deal with. Like anyother segment of society, there are those that are over zealous and believe only in using the "big stick", when a carrot would have been better, in my opinion... We have them in for dinner, especially during the various hunting seasons...
