You might have to obtain a copy of her birth certificate. Have you got a year, or approximate year, for her birth?
Question Author
just that she was born in 1948 im afraid not even sure where she was born
where were you born? try the local register office there tosee if they have her birth registered, you can get a copy certificate then for about 7 or so. you can ring them first and they will have a look for you.
There are websites where you can search the index of birth registrations. I'm using one such site at the moment. If you wish to tell me your mother's name I'll have a quick shufti for you for possible entries?
Question Author
thankyou its mary elizabeth white-harris & her maiden name was lane

Do you have any idea of your mother's mother's surname? It would help with the search.

sorry her surname when born was lane then when married her surname was white-harris thankyou for helping shammy dont worry if no luck
There's a Mary Lane registered in the December quarter of 1947. This covers the months of October, November and December. It's for the Bristol registration district, and the reference is Volume 7b, Page 293. The mother's maiden surname was also Lane, which could mean the mother was unmarried, or that she had married a Lane as well as having had the maiden name Lane. This may or may not be the the entry for your mother. I've checked 1947-1949 and there are no entries for a Mary Elizabeth Lane.

Note that the quarter (Oct-Dec) refers to the period that the birth was registered in. If the birth had been registered within the required 6 weeks of the birth, that would mean a birth no earlier than mid-August of 1947.
Something else that might help me, when did your mother marry?
Question Author
that i do not know sorry
Well, I have at least found the marriage reference:

Mary E. Lane married a Mr. White-Harris in the March quarter of 1967 (that is, the marriage was registered in that quarter). The registration district was the New Forest, Volume 6B, Page 1005.

The marriage certificate might reveal your mother's father's name (it usually does, though not always if the father was deceased or the person was illegitimate, for example). If the father's name is not revealed, that might be negative evidence for Mary E. Lane being illegitimate, and point towards that birth reference in Bristol in 1947.
