What is the area round you with the worst reputation? I live in NE Hampshire and Bordon is pretty much the place you'd only move to because its either cheap or you're in the army and have been posted there.

These days, you're more likely to take your armed guard if you're visiting Northfields.
Further afield, no-one except those who live there goes to Coalville or Hugglescote. It's a bit like Royston Vasey.

oh ok, just confused me a bit. I live near the city centre but i did always understand Leicester to be a very racially tolerant city, on the whole, certainly more than most. I still think thats correct. I personally dont think it affects how this City runs. When things went a bit up in the air after 9/11 i remember Leicester being mentioned as one of the few places that reported no incidents of race hate. It has a very good record. btw, im not arguing with you, just how i see things but i suppose it depends what enviroment you are in as to what you see and hear. I live near the space centre so i understand its probably different in this area than places such as Hinkley. Thanks for your answer.x
I live in Stoke, and the famously rough area was always Bentilee, which has the dubious distinction of being the largest council house estate in Europe. Not far beind are Knutton, and Abbey Hulton (known locally as 'scabby Abbey') and Cliff Vale is getting there.
As with all areas of all cities, there are nice parts to all these areas, and nasty parts to the supposedly 'nice' areas, but those are the ones known locally.

I live in Brighton and Moulsecoomb and Whitehawk are traditionally regarded as the areas to avoid - although the former seems to be considerably nicer than it was 30 years ago. Southwick, on the edge of Hove, is now considered to be one of the worst parts.
Like in many parts of the country, it's the smaller satellite towns that seem to be worse than the bigger ones - there seems to be more vandalism/drug problems among the young in towns such as Burgess Hill and Newhaven - although Brighton itself has a huge drugs problem.
The worst estate I've ever seen is the Gurnos, just outside Merthyr Tydfil. I shudder to think of it.

personally I like Portsmouth. Its the only city I'd ever consider living in. The people make the city. It has a real island metality about it, look at the fantastic support its football club has, the people have real passion about the place. The Portsmouth attitude is very reminiscent of the world war ethos, people sticking together, not taking any nonsense. Its the southern town with the northern attitude!
Portsmouth's really not that bad. OK, I'll give you Somers Town - no, really, it's yours, you can keep it - but otherwise it's alright. Old Portsmouth, some parts of Southsea, and the Gunwharf area are actually quite posh.
I live in West Sussex, which escapes fairly lightly for bad areas, although we do have The People's Republic of Crawley in the north of the county. It's situated close to Gatwick Airport, presumably as a last minute reminder to people as to why they want to leave the country.

Why does everybody in the Country think their local council estate is the largest in Europe.
Put "Largest council estate in Europe" including the quotes and you get very conflicting views on the subject, Bentilee was at one time the largest but isn't any more so please don't mention the fact in future :)
