We are from England and will be moving to Scotland in the not too distant future to set up a business and will be headed for the highlands, do the Scottish like the English there?

In Fort William I experienced a lot of resentment from the Scots. Just walking around would bring insults and ill feeling, maybe some places are more inclined to dislike English? (also England had just won the RWC or whatever it was!).

Oh great. It's not our fault we have such a crap government, it makes us a nation look bad. I really hope we don't experience the same. Perhaps I could somehow fake a scottish accent and they'll never know. Thanks anyway icemansav

We hope to conrtibute to their tourism by building a series of lodges for holiday lets. Provided we can get hold of a good sized peice of land.

Hiya BABES (yes, me again, lmao!).....as a Scot I have to say, we dislike the English as a nation, and as portrayed by their media, but generally don't have any problems with individuals. I live near Edinburgh, and have worked in the area for over 15 years with a huge number of english, welsh and irish folk. Not one of them has ever been made to feel any less than very welcome here, and some have moved here permanently with no thoughts of going home as they love scotland, the scots and the lifestyle. It's like anywhere else, if you make the effort to fit in, you will. In a recent UK wide survery, Scots were voted the friendliest neighbours....which speaks volumes I think. Icemansav...if you were just walking around, how did folk know you were English?? (please god don't tell me you had a union jack muscle top on and your bulldog on a leash with a George cross jacket on it).

No Kick, I was with a couple of friends boarding at Nevis range, we were in F william for a night out, I assume it was our accents that gave us away?! Horrible town, full of smack heads with needle tracks and drunks!

Although the boarding was good, it was friendlier going to Slovakia boarding!

I kept my union jack coat and st.george flag in my suitcase so can't imagine this was the gripe?

I won't be going back, except for work, that's for certain!

Hi babes I mean kick3mon, lol. Thanks, we love Scotland and have in the past always found scots very friendly, although I did wonder if it was because we were tourists. But your comment eases my worries.
By the way, sorry about yest, was having a bad day, plus my bestfriends girlfriend used to call me babes and she's way younger than I and I know that with her it was a way for her to patronise me. Anyway that's a whole other story. Sorry anyway.

hey boo, no worries at all, no apology needed, we all have off days...and QM had annoyed me so much that I wasn't taking sh1t from anyone. Was it you that reported my answers? or was it QM I wonder? Sav....what a shame you had a bad experience, but good grief, please don't judge the whole country on one incident in one town! That's not representative of us Scots, we genuinely are a very warm and welcoming people (just ask football fans the world over :o)) I mean, a man was once sick on my shoes in London, but I don't assume all english are drunken projectile vomitors with no manners, lmao! (p.s. was only joking about the bulldog etc :o))

Sorry I meant back to Fort William, I have been to Edinburgh numerous times to play golf with clients up there, fantastic bunch (but boy can they drink!!!).

Just to stick up for Fort William, I have been a few times (for a week each time) and found it a loverly place to go. I certainly never saw any smackheads - perhaps I frequented the wrong places - but there were a couple of drunks, just like there are anywhere.

I certainly never got any abuse hurled at me or could detect no ill-feeling towards me and I will most definately be going back!

i was born in the highlands and visit every year. the people are lovely. i live just south aberdeen and its great.
hope your business thrives. what kind of business is it and where will it be ? ( just being nosey now !! lol )

Thanks. We have a few places in mind I was thinking of Avemore or airshire (soz for spelling). We are going to spend a bit of time up there on holiday to give us a fairer idea of where we definatley want to go. Have you any ideas? Would be doing holiday lets after hopefully building some lodges

Hiya boo (hope you don't mind the shortened name btw :o)) you could try contacting the relevant tourist boards in the areas you're considering....you could get visitor numbers etc from them, as well as info on what holiday chalets etc the area has to let at present. both are beautiful parts of the world tho I'd guess (and this is just specualtion) that Aviemore would get more tourists per year than Ayrshire and would have tourists all year round (due to winter sports, mountain climbing/biking etc), something Ayrshire may struggle to do, which may be the key for your business. no scottish people do not hate the english what we object to is the media who continually refer to england as if scotland wales and ireland do not exist having lived and worked in both scotland and south of england id much rather rely on the scottish people if i was in trouble , anyone visiting scotland stop coming with pre conceived ideas that you are disliked or indeed superior ,

Hello mountainboo, my sister married an English guy and he is a terrific person and has made her very happy. I employ several English people and apart from the football we have a good working relationship.

I worked up in Scotland for 2-3 years, and never noticed any dislike on the basis of me being english.
