Roland (sometimes Rowland) Hilder was a great painter of the English landscape, notably Kent and the Home Counties.
Hilder was born at Great Neck, Long Island, USA, in 1905. His parents, of Kentish stock, brought him back when they returned to England in 1915.
He trained at Goldsmiths' College School of Art and his career, which extended to well over half a century, he has been recognised worldwide as the ambassador for British landscapes, in both oil and watercolour. He died in 1993 and his works are sought-after.
