I vowed that if our child was a boy, we would not give him 'Andrew' as a middle name - i think it infers that a parent thinks they are important enough to have their name carried on.

Family historians love the middle name. It was often the case in the Victorian age (and the practice has continued) to give the first-born child (and sometimes the younger children) a middle name that corresponded to the mother's maiden name or, sometimes, the grandmother's maiden name or grandfather's first name. This helps to trace the correct lineage when there are two or more possibilities at first glance.
