hi all i am wanting to book my summer holiday and i am considering the dominican republic as my next holiday but could anyone tell me if its suitable for children aged 11 and 9 or is it mainly for couples wanting to escape to peace and quiet i asked a travel agent today and she wasnt much help so could anybody help please

Can't say, because I haven't been there (but have been to other places in Caribbean) but all I can advise is, that if you're thinking of going in the school summer holidays (late July-early Sept).....don't. It's low-season there (so cheap) but it's hot and sticky and there is a risk of hurricanes.
The time to go to the Caribbean is from Christmas to Easter where the weather is reliably warm and sunny but the humidity is much lower.
Other ABers will be able advise on the hotels and resorts, though.
In the Dominican you are not free to wander about, go to Antigua, though no caribbean holiday is realy child orientated, but the Cayos on the North of Cuba have a very safe beach/ocean

thanks for the replys its made up my mind i didnt know you wernt allowed to wander about though so will have to keep looking
Go there by all means, but don't eat or drink anything.
