We've all heard of Indian Take Aways and Restaurants, but are there any Pakistani Take Aways?

The 'Indian' in the phrase 'Indian Restaurant' refers to the Indian sub-continent, rather than to the country. Over 90% of Indian restaurants in the UK are run by families with their roots in Bangladesh, rather than in India.

Prior to independence in 1971, Bangladesh was East Pakistan. Since many of the families who run 'Indian' restaurants came to this country prior to 1971, they were actually Pakistanis when they arrived. So there are really lots of Pakistani/Bangladeshi restaurants in this country and very few Indian ones!

The countries known as Pakistan and Bangladesh were a part of northern and eastern India prior to the Partition of India. As a result, the cuisines in these countries are very similar to northern and eastern Indian cuisine.

There's a Bangladeshi restaurant in Kingston, and we had a Sri Lankan in Hendon. But I think many of the ones we consider Indian are actually Pakistani, they rarely indicate they are Indian, we just think they are.

I'm sure you are right David, we have two market traders standing next to each other, one is Indian and one Pakistani. Although they are friends, the banter between them is quite rascist at times, and most people would not know which was which anyway.
