Tie trivia
British striped neckties will generally run from high left to low right while the American ties will run from high right to low left.-- why?
It seems likely that men who wear ties make more money than men who do not. --

More women than men know how to tie a bowtie :-)
I own about thirty, but I'm the only man in my office who wears one - out of eight. Personally, I feel that if you look like a professional at work, you tend to get thought of as one, and treated like one. If you dress like you've come in on your day off ....
answerbok - two I only wear them on very rare occasions like the wedding/chistening of very close friends or funerals of special relatives. I think they're a pain to put on and they get in the way. Andy - if you dress you like you've come in your day off... what? Treaclefight - DO tell me more please ;+D))
Totally agree with Andy Hughes, we can come in smart casual but I wear a suit, tie and cufflinks everyday. It makes me feel professional and gives out the right signals. I have about 35-40 but only really wear about 10 of them on a regular basis. I have around 30 pairs of cufflinks.

Paulz - I meant that if you dress like you've come in on your day off - you get treated like that. For me, and I suspect others who have contributed to this thread, it's more about how the individual feels, rather than necessarily the perception of him by others - it's just a personal choice. I used to wear casual clothes, but switched to shirt and tie on my 40th birthday (dignity of age or something!) and haven't felt the urge to chnage back.

I don't own a single tie and hope to land a job where I don't have to wear one. I used to have to wear one working at Toys "R" Us and that was enough for one lifetime. My Dad wears them to work and when I picture him all I really see is the tie. Blow me if that's the way I won't my future offspring to see me :)
About 30. I like wearing them as a way of self-expression (especially the multi-coloured bright ones). They do occasionally get in the way, but not oo much. The main disadvantage is that I have sometimes been approached and spoken to by complete strangers in shops who seem to assume that I'm a member of staff, just because I'm wearing a tie.
