Amos was one of the minor prophets, and is only mentioned in the book that bears his name. All the personal details the Bible gives is that he was a shepherd, and came from Tekoa, 12 miles from Jerusalem.

Mattathias. You'll find the reference in Luke Chapter 3 Verse 25. From Verse 23 to Verse 28 of that chapter, the whole line of fathers, from Jesus right back to God himself, is listed. (Sorry, Cetti! But you're certainly right in that Amos was a minor prophet.)
It was an altogether different Amos QM - The minor prophet Amos' ministry was during the reign of Jeroboam II (766-746BC). Now, Amos' son, Matthias (as in Luke) died (166BC). His son was the great Jewish military leader Judas Maccabeus.

"On Mattathias' death (166 B.C.) the leadership passed to his son Judas Maccabeus, from whose surname the family name is derived. Judas, an excellent military leader, defeated an expedition sent from Syria to destroy him. Having occupied Jerusalem, he reconsecrated the Temple; the feast of Hanukkah celebrates this event (165 B.C.)."

Hope you follow - written in a hurry :-))

I stand humbly corrected, Ma'am. I just didn't research it properly. Mea maxima culpa! All I can now offer in pathetic self-defence is this...We're agreed that there was no major prophet called Amos, so perhaps Heather was looking for the son of just anyone called Amos.

On that basis, too, how about Amoz - with a 'z' (I know the names are not synonymous, despite the similarity) - who was the father of Isaiah? Now Isaiah was a major prophet, so maybe the question meant the son was the major prophet rather than the father?

This is all just wittering, Heather...Go with Cetti's answer.

You can get off your knees now QM. LOL!!!

The only one that was married was the prince/prophet - Moses. He had 2 sons, Gershon and Eliexer. All the 'biggies' Elijah, Elisha, Jeremiah, Isaiah and Daniel were not.

I'll happily go along with the 'any old amos' theory!

Sunny Sunday to you, Sir ;-))

Didn't 'e used to be in Emmerdale?
