There - from Sanskrit - it means 'amaranthus', a flower that symbolises immortality. (Of course, it probably means something else entirely in Maori!)
Personally, I've only heard the name pronounced in the same way as the opening two syllables of the Scottish place-name, Kirriemuir. (I think that's what Cetti was getting at, too.)
