If I take a trip to France, is there any restriction on bringing back the likes of mustard, vinegar, spices etc.? Even if I then decided to sell them in The UK? The tax situation is evident re-booze and fags, but what of foodstuffs?

You shouldn't have a problem bringing anything for your own consumption. If it's to be for resale, the VAT inspectors would no doubt be interested!
Generally most stuff you buy over there is ok however see this site for the full list:http://www.hmce.gov.uk/ Cheers
