A doge - in medi�val Venice and Genoa - was the Chief Magistrate. The word is related to the modern Italian 'duce', pronounced doo-chay, meaning 'leader'. This was the title used by Mussolini, the Italian wartime leader.

As to what he 'does', the answer is...judge or lead.
