Much as I love them, old people shopping in supermarkets at the weekend drive me up the wall - they've had all week - am I an intolerant miserable sod or does it annoy other people as well?

Nice one smudge if most people were as tolerant as you wouldn't the world be a more pleasant place.
I happen to have read your question on 'Armistice Day' & was thinking of my Grandad who was killed in WW1 & is buried in Ypres. He never had the chance to grow old. I was also thinking of my other Grandad who was injured in WW2. I do have a very good sense of humour & am not a sanctimonious old whatever you may think......You asked a question & I answered, which is what I thought this site was for. I must have got it all wrong!!
Well done smudge, I totally agree. Old (sic) people have just as much right as the rest of us (me) if not more. They have earned it. You haven't scubaboy, yet.
So your idea of a nightmare would be to find yourself behind Jade Goody when she is 80 in Tescos...........?!
Who is Jade Goody?
