Emerald Isle Books Catalogue No. 95 listing trees incidentally quotes his birth as 1857 in Portglenone, Co. Antrim [var. Cookstown], but other sources suggest Dundee as his birthplace on the same date. He was educated in Ireland before setting out on his now famous plant expeditions to China.
