He later studied at St Catherine's College, Oxford, and then worked at the economics department of the Trades Union Congress; for Lambeth Council; and as the Labour Party's director of communications. He is widely regarded as the man who put Tony Blair in power.
He served in Blair's government as minister without portfolio, then transport and industry secretary before resigning in December 1998. He later became Northern Ireland secretary and resigned in January 2001. Mandelson's grandfather was the Labour cabinet minister Herbert Morrison.
