Living in Scotland

Hey. I live on the South Coast (near Brighton) and am thinking about moving to Scotland. Is the cost of living up in Scotland worse or better (generally) than where I am at the moment? I am single by the way if that makes a difference! LOL

Whereabouts in Scotland are you thinking of moving to? It a big place you know.....Grocery bills should be exactly the same as we are quite domesticated up here now and have all the superstores......Housing costs will be dear in the Glasgow and Edinburgh areas and transport costs can be high in the Highlands and Islands areas but other than that nothing drastically different to what you are used to now.

Thanks Steve, I am thinking of moving where my business is situated (Inverness) in the Highlands. Just need a change of scenery (and what a change that would be!) Just wondered really what the housing costs would be, if they were any cheaper than here. The furthest North I've ever travelled is Lancashire and I was amazed at how much cheaper the Beer was! LOL. It'd be good if that was the same up there at least! hehehe

I think you will find housing costs in Inverness considerably cheaper than in Brighton. For example, I've just seen on the Internet a 3-bedroomed detached house in Inverness on sale for offers above �125,000; compared with one in Brighton at �315,000.

I think you would find almost everything is substantially cheaper in Inverness compared to Brighton. My mate moved from Tayside to London about 5 years ago and could not believe the difference in prices ( beer 25% dearer for a start ). If you are seriously considering it, I would say go for it! I don't think you'd regret a thing. Friendly people, fantastic scenery and a lower cost of living. Only down sides may be the weather ( big diff from the south coast of England to the north of Scotland ) and the blasted midge ( or midgie ).

Inverness itself is less than inspiring, in my experience, though as people have said you are soon in very beautiful rural areas. It's a long way from anywhere too (2.5 hrs just to get to Aberdeen!), though at least Easyjet fly to London.
