Female trans-africa walker 80s or 90s

Can anyone remember the name of the woman who walked across Africa in the late 80s or early 90s and (briefly) made headlines as a result - the only detail I can give is that the book cover of her story depicted her walking along a desert road in a blue vest and trainers.

Thanks - I had an inkling it was fiona or ffion but I didnt want to mention it for fear of misleading if I was wrong.
