What is the most common surname in England?

When I was a kid it was Smith, Jones, Brown and Williams in that order. I have heard, though, that Gupta is now in at about number 3.

Yes it used to be Smith & Brown, etc., when I was a kid, but in our telephone directory, the name Patel takes up most of the 'P' pages.

It is still Smith, there are more than half a million Smiths in England. I believe that Smith is also the most common surname in the US.
