Napoleon's height aftern varies from source to another because the French system and the English system of measurement were different, a French foot being equivalent to 1.067877 English feet. According to the Memoirs of Marchand, Antommarchi measured Napoleon's body before the beginning of his autopsy. He was 168.6 cm tall. This actually makes Napoleon taller than the average person, since the average height in France during that time was about 165cm. I think that the myth about his shortness comes from the paintings where he was often surrounded by Imperial Guardsmen who were above average height and wore tall hats. Also the difference in measuring systems probably has something to do with the fact that he's often seen as almost a dwarf-like figure, although he was actually a tall fellow.
