Does New York in the USA have an connection with York in the UK. ie, Was NY named after York?

yes it was the "New" York! Of course originally it was New Amsterdam.
In 1664 the Duke of York (later to become King James II of England) equipped an armed expedition, which took possession of New Amsterdam and which was thenceforth called New York, after the Duke.
kempie is right, it is named after the Duke not the city.
