I would be really grateful to hear people's suggestions about how to motivate people to hit their sales targets? I want to know what to say, how to build enthusiasm, the right rewards (it's a mostly female work force). Thanks in advance.

Obviously ya got to show them who's boss, but I think rather than push them to work, how's about giving them a bonus of about 5% of the salary. It depends how much money you have!... I don't want to question your position, but surely if you are a manager or whatever, you should have a good idea of how to make a workforce work?
Firstly I would suggest that you make sure the sales targets are realistic. I used to work for a company whose sales targets were extremely unrealistic and AFAIK, are still not being met after 12 years or more (this is a national chain of shops), basically because the company opened a store in a relatively poor area with little or no sales research. It really helps to believe that the sales target is realistically achievable and boosts morale.
You can also try advertising the staffs targets and accomplishments, on a work notice board, at the end of a month the winner gets say, a 25 bonus. That way all the staff can try to better themselves. Its not a lot of money, but would you turn it down. As long as its done in an encouraging way, might help............
