Croissant anyone?

Is it true that the word croissant derives from when the French invaded Turkey and used their symbol to make the croissant shape, if not where does the word come from? meia x

as far as i know,it first surfaced in vienna,and it was to do with the turkish being repelled/defeated. hope that helps.x
