A bloke in Devon has managed to so far avoid planning permission for his helicopter hangar by arguing that it's a temporary construction so a shed should be fine.
You would have to consult your deeds and any existing planning permissions on your house. In many new-build and renovation/conversion cases, permitted development rights have been removed from properties - especially rural ones and any shed must have full planning permission - the same often goes for oil/gas tanks and satellite dishes/aerials
If you realised how many people have illegal extensions and/or garden buildings you would be shocked. On the other hand, provided you have no informal objections for your neighbours then planning enforcement officeer typically have better things to bet getting on with than dealing with rogue sheds (how would they find out if you neighbours do not object?).
