The Long Rider's Guild offers a negative perspective on Norris but folks should know that isn't the only perspective. The purported experts cited by the guild primarily focused on archives at the University of Wyoming, material left there by Norris wife who tried to exploit her husband's career by writing a book. The archive at Wyoming apparently reflects the wife's notes and commentary.
An investigative report conducted fairly extensive oral and ethnohistory among whites who knew Norris when he lived on Long Island inthe 1940s but also with Souix and Blackfeet people who recalled his earlier exploits. For a completely different perspective check out www.franknorris.com. That the Long Riders Guildwould present such a negative picture of Norris when the man isn't alive to defend himself says much about them and their purported experts. It is easy to discredit the dead. I wouldadd that any group calling itself the Long Riders brings to my mind a group of adults with adolescent fanasties about the old American west (the James/Younger gang was dumbed by the press the Long Ridersfor the distances they might ride to rob a bank.
I suggest one enjoythe movie for what it is and forget about whether or not it is a true depiction of Norris' life. It probably is not but that doesn't denigrate what this man accomplished with horses.
For information on the Gilbert Jones herd of Mustangs check out http://www.conquistador.com/index.html. The herd is mentioned at the end of the movie and does exist consisting what Mustang breeders refer to as the rancher strain of Spanish Mustang.
It is all a matter of POV. I have checked out both sites listed previouslyand have found the long riders to be very pushy and self important, in their angry and jelousy laced articles. On the other hand, I found www.frankhopkins.com, to be a pleasent accounting of a man who loved the American Mustang, and the horses he loved. There are several links with many pics that are wonderful for anyone who has ever wondered about this amazing breed of horse, in addition to stories, and accounts about the man himself. Check them out and decide for yourself.....You can only trust your own deductions. I know who I am rooting for.
