I always believe that it is appropriate to dress for an afternoon / evening wedding in something smart, but not overly formal. To bridge the gap, why not invest in a spangly cardigan or wrap which you can use to cover your shoulders for the afternoon ceremony, and then you can leave it in the car / cloakroom, and look suitable for the evening. You may wonder how I know all this? I have two sisters, threee daughters, and i worked as the only man with twenty-two ladies for about six years - you learn a lot!
Make sure all your accessories are coloured or people will say (even if it's untrue) that you look like you're going to a funeral!
If the weather carries on like it is, you'll freeze!!
some brides would prefer that guests not wear black, it might be a courtesy to check. I remember seeing one wedding in the USA where all the women in the bridal party, including the bvride, wore black!!
Have to agree that predominantly black outfit is not right for a wedding (unless its an 'alternative' wedding). I also think that bare shoulders are wrong at the service; only the bride should be allowed to do this (I am a bit old-fashioned). Keep a shawl or something on until the evening do.
