While the word "blackjack" has several meanings, few people know this to be a large mug or jug for serving beer. Blackjacks are made of leather and are sealed with pine tar.In 16th century England, a blackjack lined with silver or gilt metal and decorated with silver bells was called a "gyngleboy" (the bells' jingling was supposed to keep the devil at bay).
