In Reading the (daft labour imho) council have decided to start calling Reading a city (even though they've lost out on two of the recent 'competitions' for this). Signs point to 'City Centre' and buses go into the 'City'. I think its a load of old money-wasting nonsense and, frankly, an insult to the Queen who can bestow this honour on a town.

I used to live in Northampton and they keep applying to be a city. They don't have a cathedral. I believe that once a year a lot of towns apply for city status in the beleif that it will boost their economy. It just seems to waste money trying.

Chelmsford's football team go under the soubriquet of City, even though the place is most definitely a town.

Stirling Town in Scotland became a city even though it does not have a cathedral. It does however have a magnificent castle.

Will people stop spouting the myth that cities have to have Cathedrals. They do not!
